Notes:
Total Playing Time: 64'04 Recorded in April 1994 at St. George's, Brandon Hill, Bristol During his student days Bax was one of several young composers urged by the viola player Lionel Tertis to write for the viola as a solo instrument. In addition to his student work, Bax later wrote a concerto and sonata for viola and piano as well as the two works recorded here. The Fantasy Sonata for viola and harp is not often heard and in 1993 Richard Crabtree and Charles Matthews decided to perform it using the piano to replace the harp. This project was greeted with great interest and forms the basis of this recording. We wish to thank the Sir Arnold Bax Trust for their support in the preparation of this recording. Front cover: Coloured medallion from the Bax Collection, University College, Cork Olympia ℗ 1994 © 1994 Made in England CD comes packaged in a standard jewel case with 20 page booklet including photos and liner notes in English, French and German.
